“Be Realistic”
Recently I was asked what the worst advice I ever received was, I answered: “Be Realistic.”
If you are trying to achieve something extraordinary in the world, the last thing you should do is “be realistic.” Because for every reason you have why it should be you, this world has ten reasons why it shouldn’t be you. These days I almost believe a healthy dose of delusion and a slight superiority complex is necessary to be great. If it’s 1 out of 10, it has to be you. If it’s 1 out of 1000, it still has to be you.
However, big dreams are not enough. Execution is where most fall short, myself included. These are the times where the words “be realistic” are the most piercing. You can change the way you think in minutes, but changing who you are takes years, and who we are naturally as humans is lazy. But that’s why it’s even more important to embrace our delusional goals, not for the trophy, but for the champion we need to become in the process. Grit is something you earn.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day, but so wasn’t Caesar.”
Give yourself time to be the person you want to be, and don’t be realistic about it. Greatness awaits.
